Hobby quality RC trucks and cars usually use a 540 size electric motor. Power is supplied by a 7.2 volt rechargeable battery pack. To charge the battery pack, a 15-minute (mechanical timer) fast charger is commonly used. There are also peak detection chargers which prevent overcharging and are well worth their price.
The speed is controlled by a speed controller, which can be mechanical or electronic. A mechanical speed control uses a servo which moves a wiper arm, which in turn varies the amount of current flowing from the battery to the motor. An electronic speed control (ESC) replaces the servo and wiper arm with a single electronic unit that controls the current to the motor electronically.
The truck is controlled by a radio control system. This consists of a transmitter, receiver, and servos. The transmitter is what you hold in your hand. It sends signals to the receiver and servos mounted on your R/C truck. The servos in turn use mechanical movement to steer the truck and control the speed.
There are 1/10 scale electric rc trucks that are custom designed to be run on-road. The suspension is lowered with short shock springs. Low profile truck tires also help handle high speed turns. A good model is the Tamiya F-150 (pictured above).
1/10 scale electric rc stadium trucks (ST) are highly recommended for beginners. The 2 wheel drive design makes these models easy to build and maintain. With powerful electric motors, ready to run (RTR) models can reach 15 mph out of the box. And with some modifications, can reach over 25 mph.
And popular body styles like Ford, Dodge, Chevy, GMC, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda add to the realism and enjoyment of the hobby.
Recommended models: Traxxas Rustler and DuraTrax Evader ST
1/10 scale electric rc monster trucks are usually powered by two electric motors, providing twice the power of stadium rc trucks. With four wheel drive, these custom models are slightly more complex and better suited for experienced hobbyists. You can expect speeds of 23+ mph out of the box, and speeds of 30 mph in modified form (e.g. using faster motors and high capacity NiMH batteries).
Highly recommended model: Traxxas E-Maxx
Small 1/28 and 1/18 scale electric powered mini rc trucks are the latest craze. Choose from popular models such as the Kyosho Mini-Z Monster Truck, Losi Mini-T and the Tamiya TLT-1.
